Tirol Atlas Project

The Tyrol Atlas is a cross-border interregional project supported by the cultural departments of the Province of Tyrol and the autonomous Province of Bozen, South Tyrol and co-financed by the EU. Concepts, content and technical realisation are all the work of the Cultural Studies Team, Department of Geography, University of Innsbruck. The project is planned to run from 2001 to 2007.
The Area Presented
The Tyrol Atlas has been conceived as a frame map. Thus, apart from the central area of North, East and South Tyrol, a border some 20kms broad, stretching into the neighbouring regions, has also been included. (The exact limit usually runs along clear geographical markers such as mountain ridges.) In this way cross-border comparisons and interconnections become possible.
Content
The Tyrol Atlas is based on a number of modules that overlap, complement one another and offer possibilities for expansion. The aim is to create a trans-national, multimedia information system for application-orientated questions. The implementation focuses on information processing steered by the user on spatially referenced and planning relevant subjects.
Background to Data
The total area of the Tyrol Atlas covers more than 60.000km2 and includes 4 countries with 12 provinces (A), provinces (I) or cantons (CH) and administrative regions (D). In order to present this area in the desired form, it was necessary to create geometry models suited to the special demands of the Tyrol Atlas project. All this would not have been possible without the friendly assistance and, in most cases, invaluable supply of a variety of fundamental data from a number of data providers in the area in question. The statistical data comes from the authorities responsible for statistics in the respective countries.
Technology
The Tyrol Atlas is the result of original programming and orientates itself on the increasing demands of cartography on the internet. As a modern publication medium the Atlas applies the latest technology, whenever possible from the field of open standards. The use of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and free data banks like PostgreSQL/PostGis are a contribution to the Open-Source System.
