Thiersee, the village with the second largest surface area in the district of Kufstein, stretches along the entire Thierseetal. The village is situated at the transition zone between the northern Limestone Alps and the Voralpen Alps, which is characterized by a beautiful landscape with jagged and gentle elements. Thiersee is subdivided into the villages of Vorderthiersee, Hinterthiersee and Landl with further hamlets and impressive isolated farmhouses. Vorderthiersee is characterized by recent developments, such as the settlemet "Zu See", north of the lake. Since 1799 the well-known Passion plays have taken place every six years. Thiersee efforts to regenerate its village led to an award within the European Programme for rural regeneration in 2002. |
