Kufstein is Tyrol's second largest town, and the capital of the district of Kufstein. It is situated in the north and the west of the castle which bears the same name like the town. Kufstein castle was built on a limestone rock above the town. In 1931 the so called Heldenorgel organ was built in the tower of Kufstein castle, to commemorate those killed in World War I. Today, the Heldenorgel organ is the world's largest open-air organ. The castle is a tourist-attraction and a site for cultural events. Kufstein's town square burnt down in the wars of 1703 and 1809. Around the historic centre several new developments have been built in recent times. Kufstein used to be very important for the shipping on the Inn Rriver. Today Kufstein is an industrial town with well known companies such as Riedel-Glas and Kneissl.
