The district of Kufstein, located in the North Tyrolean Unterland, is characterised by its vibrant industry and rapidly growing population. Furthermore, it is marked by the easy accessibility to all its local communities with the exception of the Alpbachtal. Kufstein, the district town, is situated directly on the border to Bavaria and is the site of the district hospital and for some years also the professional college and further centralised facilities. An economically dynamic area with numerous high-tech companies has developed around the town. The town of Wörgl, the second largest town in the district, represents the central transport nucleus and business centre and is also Tyrol's youngest town. Among the most important branches of industry in the district of Kufstein is the chemical industry and in this connection Sandoz, formerly Biochemie, in Kundl should be mentioned as one of the biggest employers in the region as are the construction and tourist industries. The latter plays a particularly important role in the communities outside the Inntal, for example, the Alpbachtal, the Wildschönau, the Söllandl and the areas around the big lakes (Walchsee, Thiersee, Hintersteinersee, Hechtsee). Further attractions include the spa centre in Bad Häring, with Tyrol's first mineral spring, the historical farmbuilding museum in Kramsach and the old town in Rattenberg, the smallest community in Tyrol area-wise and a shipping and mining centre in the Middle Ages.
