Image collection »Stilfser Joch«
The Stilfser Joch is one of the highest passes in the entire alpine region. The road was completed in 1824. At that time western Upper Italy (Oberitalien) was still part of Austria and the road was meant to secure inner Austrian transport. When Lombardy fell to Italy the pass lost its importance. Nowadays the pass serves a tourism function and the winter sports resort of Bormio has profited from this tourist traffic.
