Image collection »Castle Ambras«

Castle Ambras lies surrounded by forest on a terrace on a slope south of Innsbruck. It had been a fortified castle before Archduke Ferdinand II turned it into a friendly and luxurious residence in the Renaissance style for his wife Phillipine Welser in the 16th century. With two building complexes, the Spanish Hall (today a concert hall) and large park the castle is one of the most important castles of this time in Austria. Ferdinand was a passionate collector of curios and treasures from all over the world. He brought them to Ambras were they were put on display in the first museum of modern times. Today Castle Ambras is an outpost of the Museum of Art History in Vienna.
